National Championships at Penzance

To coincide with all of the renovations at the club – respected club member Adrian Symons has also commissioned a beautiful wooden plaque engraved with details of all of the National Championships which have been held at Penzance – which he has kindly presented to the club .

The plaque and the upgrades to the club’s facilities are timely as the Club will be hosting the Merlin Rocket National Championships in 2016.  Over seventy boats are expected for a week’s high performance sailing.  The Club has regularly hosted National, European and World sailing championships since it was formed.  In 1973 the Club hosted the World/National Enterprise Championships with an entry of 232 boats.  This was a world record and was entered into the Guinness Book of Records.  Over the years many competitors have sailed in these events and contributed to the economy of the district.

The club was built in 1939 and has gone from strength to strength. As ex-Vice Commodore Margaret Keith reviewed: “Penzance Sailing Club is a great little family club that offers dinghy sailing, racing and cruiser racing and positively encourages family involvement.”

With this refurbishment – the next seventy six years is looking promising too!
