In the late 1960’s and early 70’s Spencer Field, an ex President of the Sailing club, took some unique cine film footage of the club and its sailing activities. These films lay in a box in his son’s garage for some 30 years. They were finally re discovered and professionally put onto DVD by the John Adam’s renowned Penzance based SSS films company.
Under John’s expert guidance – John Matthews and Terry Marks, members of the club since the mid 60’s added a commentary.
The DVD is in two parts. The first part shows the domestic sailing at the club in the late 60’s. But as well as the sailing it also covers social events including a cricket match against MBSC and also shows members travelling to different sailing events – including footage of Restronguet SC.
The second section shows the Enterprise National Championships held at the Club in 1973. This was in the Guinness book of records as the largest National Championships for two man dinghies with 232 entries. Apart from on the water shots there is the launching and recovery of the fleet and the behind the scenes activities to cater for such a massive event.
It has been many, many years since this film was shown. If you like sailing, care about nostalgia and want to look back into the club’s unique sailing history this is an event not to be missed. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Here are a few stills that I have pulled from the film – showing both the club and faces that will be familiar to many – to whet your appetite before Thursday!
