Penzance harbour; past, present and future – a talk by Terry Marks

Last evening the Clubhouse was again “packed to the rafters” to hear a talk given by Terry Marks.  The title of the talk was “Penzance harbour; past, present and future”. Terry is a past Commodore of the Club and was born and brought up in Penzance.

He has been a member of the Club since the early sixties and associated with boats and the harbour (and in particular boats in Penzance harbour) since he could walk.  Consequently therefore, well able to give an informed and informative talk on this subject.

The talk straddled the whole lifetime of the harbour from gaining its Charter from Henry VIII right up to the present day.   There was also a tantalising look into the future.

Of particular interest to the large gathering were these plans for the future.  From Terry’s talk it appears that little has changed since Henry VIII days with the desire to provide a safe haven for all sorts of craft in Penzance.  We are still seeking that safe haven.

However, after obtaining Government and Council grants, studies are being carried out (and due to report shortly) on a variety of measures to provide that safe haven.  Additionally these changes could safeguard the future prosperity of the town.  The plans include a breakwater, marina and extensive on shore developments.
