Penzance juniors brave the elements!

The youth and junior sailors of Penzance Sailing Club were welcomed by a fresh, force 4, southerly breeze for their annual competition at the end of September. With ten brave sailors battling in the annual junior event; under 16’s for the Mary Wales Cup and the Under 18’s for the Cadet Cup – the Race Officer of the day being Adrian Symons. The schedule was to have two qualifying races followed by a final race to determine the winner of this year’s event.

The warning signal for the first race sounded, however slight confusion over the start sequence meant that the sailors were a little late but were still battling for the best position off the line. The race was fast and action packed. The second qualifier was even more lively with the wind still building as had been forecast. The sailors once again started the race however the weather started to get more fierce and as more of the sailors decided to take a swim, the race committee decided to call it a day so shortened the course. Lloyd Williams went on to take the victory with Polly Stephens in second.

Congratulation also to the other juniors taking part George Schmidt, Aidan Mooney, Aoife Mooney and Roisin Mooney.

In the Cadet Cup the two older sailors match raced all the way but Kian Andrews was able to force Sebi Schmidt to tack away allowing Kian to take the honours and win the 2016 Cadet Cup. All sailors then made their way back to the club where they were greeted by freshly prepared food and drink which was well deserved after a hard day on the water and trophies presented by Rear Commodore of Training Crisso Smallman.

Many thanks to Kian Andrews fro his help with this week’s report.
